Guide to Student Life
1. Scholarship
'The Foreign Student's Scholarship' is provided for foreign
students in the JCLP. It is granted to eight students each year
who are selected for their superior character and attitude to
study. It provides a one-off stipend of 270,000 yen . (1997)
Various other scholarships are available to students who have
completed the JCLP course and who wish to continue their studies
in one of the Ryukoku faculty or graduate school programs.
2. Accommodation
Ryukoku University provides rooms for 180 foreign students
in the four dormitories listed below. Some Japanese students also
live in these dormitories. As their part-time work these students
assist the foreign students with day-to-day living and study,
etc. The Student Affairs Office of this university and the Student
Conference Center (Tel: 075-771-0667)can direct students to other
accommodation.
1). RYUKOKU KAIKAN
- Style: - - - - - - - - - - -single rooms, shared facilities
- Costs: - - - - - - - - - - -Rent: 15,000 yen/month (lighting & water included)
- Electricity for air conditioner separate.
- Bond: 30,000 yen
- Facilities: - - - - - - - - air conditioner/heater, desk, bookshelf, bed.
2).MUKAIJIMA GAKUSEI CENTER
- Style: - - - - - - - - - - -single, self-contained apartments
- Costs: - - - - - - - - - - -Rent: 22,000 yen/month + utilities and air conditioner rental(optional).
- (approx. 4,000 yen )
- Facilities: - - - - - - - - kitchenette, bath-unit, desk, bookshelf, refrigerator,
- microwave, telephone, air conditioner, bed, etc.
3). KUZUHA-SO
- Style: - Single: Individual bedrooms (x2). Shared kitchen, bathroom, toilet.
- - Family: Self-contained apartments
- Costs: - Single: Rent - 10,000 yen/month + electricity.
- Maintenance fee - 5,000 yen/month. Bond - 50,000 yen .
- - Family: Rent - 20,000 yen/month + electricity.
- Maintenance fee - 10,000 yen . Bond - 100,000 yen .
- Facilities: - air conditioner, desk, bookshelf, bed(s), refrigerator, microwave oven, locker, futons, etc.
4). OMIYA-SO
- Style: - Single: three sizes. Individual bedrooms (2 or 3) Shared kitchen ,bathroom, toilet.
- - Family: Self-contained apartments
- Costs: - Single A (small): Rent - :10,000 yen/month + electricity
- Single B (standard): Rent - :15,000 yen/month + electricity
- Single C (large): Rent - :20,000 yen/month + electricity
- Bond::50,000 yen, payable on entry only
- Family: Rent - :35,000 yen/month + electricity
- Bond - 100,000 yen , payable on entry only
- Facilities - air conditioner, desk, bed(s), refrigerator, shelves
3. Living Expenses
Students will need funds of at least 100,000 yen per month, for living expenses in Kyoto.
4. Privileges for JCLP Students
- 'College Student' resident status;
- Student discounts at movies, theatres, galleries, and on long distance travel with Japan Railways (JR);
- Medical fee assistance from the Association of International Education, Japan (AIEJ). (This insurance plan reimburses you for 80% of the medical expenses not covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme. It is available only to those on "College Student" visas.)
- Use of all facilities available to regular Ryukoku students;
- Recommendation for acceptance into the Ryukoku Faculty of Intercultural Communication.
- Recommendations are offered to up to 10 students each year.
- Also, from among those students, one student with superior grades will receive a waiver of all school fees for the next year and a scholarship of 50,000 yen per month.
- For students who wish to continue their studies from the JCLP into one of the faculty or graduate school programs of this university, a 50,000 yen reduction in admission fees.
