2025年7月7日（月）から7月19日（土）まで、龍谷大学の海外協定校の学生を対象に、短期留学プログラム「R-STEP（Ryukoku Short-Term Experience Program）」を開催しています。今年は7カ国から10名の学生が参加しました。７月9日（水）プログラム2日目のフィールドトリップでは学生バディと共に美しい建築と静かな雰囲気が印象的な西本願寺と美しい庭園と日本の歴史にとって非常に重要な意味を持つ二条城を訪れました。
以下、R-STEP参加学生のレポートを紹介します。

Field Trip to Kyoto – Day 1
This Wednesday, our group of international students went on our very first field trip to Kyoto. It was both exciting and fascinating! The first place we visited was Nishi Hongwanji, a beautiful Buddhist temple. We had a guided tour there, which made the experience even more interesting. We saw the largest Noh stage in Japan and learned about the unique architectural features of traditional Japanese palaces—like the special floors that make sounds when people walk on them (for security purposes). I especially liked how the guide pointed out small details, like floor repairs shaped like flowers, mountains or fruits and incredibly detailed dragon carvings on the lanterns.
Since it’s my first time in Japan, I was really amazed to discover all these little things about how a temple like this is designed and used.
Next, we went to Kinkakuji (the Golden Pavilion). It was super crowded, which isn’t surprising since it’s one of the most popular tourist spots in Kyoto. To be honest, the temple itself didn’t impress me as much as I expected—but it was still cool to see the famous temple from Mishima’s novel in real life. I also had the most delicious matcha ice cream there! After that, our group went for lunch, and I had oyakodon at a cozy little restaurant designed like a traditional Japanese house.
Then we headed to Nijo Castle. Its layout reminded me a bit of Nishi Hongwanji, especially the wooden halls and rooms. But what stood out most to me was the garden—it was simple and minimalist, very different from the more decorative Chinese-style gardens with ponds and rocks.
Our final stop was a small Shinto shrine nearby. There, we learned how the shrine is structured and were shown how to properly pray. I even gave it a try and made a wish!
All in all, it was an amazing first day of our field trip. The schedule was full but never rushed, which I really appreciated. Big thanks to the organizers! The guides and Japanese students were super kind and helpful, and always ready to answer our questions.

京都でのフィールドトリップ初日
今週の水曜日、私たち留学生グループは初めてのフィールドワークで京都を訪れました。とてもワクワクして、魅力的な一日でした！

最初に訪れたのは、西本願寺という美しい仏教寺院です。ガイド付きのツアーがあり、より深く理解することができました。日本最大の能舞台を見学したり、昔の御所に見られる独特な建築様式について学んだりしました。例えば、歩くと音が鳴る「鴬張りの床」は、侵入者を察知するための工夫だそうです。特に印象的だったのは、床の修繕部分が花や山、果物の形になっていたり、提灯に彫られた精巧な龍の彫刻など、細部へのこだわりでした。
日本に来るのは今回が初めてなので、こうした細かい工夫や寺院の使われ方を知ることができて、とても感動しました。

次に訪れたのは金閣寺（鹿苑寺）です。とても混雑していましたが、京都でも有数の観光地なので納得です。正直、思っていたほどの感動はなかったのですが、三島由紀夫の小説に登場する有名な寺を実際に見ることができて嬉しかったです。そこで食べた抹茶アイスが最高に美味しかったのも良い思い出です。

その後、グループで昼食をとり、昔ながらの日本家屋風の小さなレストランで親子丼をいただきました。

午後は二条城へ向かいました。建物の構造は西本願寺と少し似ていて、木造の廊下や部屋が印象的でした。中でも特に心に残ったのは庭園です。池や岩が多い中国風の庭園とは違い、シンプルでミニマルな美しさがありました。

最後に、近くの小さな神社を訪れました。神社の構造について学び、正しい参拝の仕方も教えてもらいました。私も実際にお祈りして、願い事をしてみました。

全体として、とても充実したフィールドワーク初日でした。スケジュールは盛りだくさんでしたが、慌ただしさはなく、ゆったりと楽しめました。企画してくださった皆さんに心から感謝しています。ガイドの方々や龍谷大学の学生たちはとても親切で、質問にも丁寧に答えてくれました。

“Today we explored some beautiful historical monuments in Kyoto. First, we visited Nishi Honganji, it had amazing wooden architecture and beautiful paintings, some of them restored and some of them originals, which i found very interesting. My friend almost got attacked by an asian giant hornet there which was really scary. Then we went to Kinkakuji, the golden pavilion, and it looked absolutely beautiful. I saw a huge spider there which I’m not used to at all so it was scary but also really interesting. We had lunch at a small, cute café and the food was very tasty. After that we visited Nijo Castle which also had beautiful wooden architecture and lots of historical paintings, I especially enjoyed the ones with animals. Then we visited a small shrine called Mikane Shrine, where we tried out a prayer ritual. We also collected goshuin stamps at each place. It was extremely hot and humid, but despite that I loved every second. I’m really excited for the next trip!”

今日私たちはいくつかの京都の美しいモニュメントを旅しました。初めに西本願寺を訪れました。西本願寺は驚くほど美しい木造建築や屏風があり、復元されたもの、現物が残っているものの両方があり、非常に興味深かったです。私の友人は危うく、日本の巨大なスズメバチに襲われそうになりとても恐ろしかったです。その後、金閣寺に行きました。金の庭園は美しかったです。そこでも見たこともない巨大なクモを見つけましたが、怖さと同時に興味深さを感じました。かわいい小さなカフェでご飯を食べましたがすごくおいしかったです。ランチを済ませた後、二条城でも美しい木造建築と歴史的な絵画を楽しみ、その中でも特に、動物が描かれたものがお気に入りです。そして、三金神社と呼ばれる小さな神社を訪れました。そこでは参拝の儀式をしました。また、すべての場所で御朱印を集めました！とても蒸し暑かったですがすべての瞬間が最高でした。次のフィールドトリップも楽しみです！
