Originally established as a Buddhist seminary, Ryukoku University is one of
the oldest higher educational institutions in Japan, focusing on the promotion
of research and Shin Buddhist education.

【Important Historical Facts】
- Emperor Meiji visited the university's Omiya Campus in 1880. Other dignitaries
 have also been welcomed since that time, including Rajendra Prasad (India's
 first President) in 1958.

- Japan's first general magazine [Chūōkōron, Central Review] was published by
 Ryukoku University in 1887.

- Ryukoku University oversees the Ryukoku Museum, a Kyoto-based institution
 boasting several important cultural and Buddhist artifacts.
