龍谷大学の「建学の精神」は「浄土真宗の精神」です。本学は、阿弥陀仏の願いに生かされ、真実の道を歩まれた親鸞聖人の生き方に学び、「真実を求め、真実に生き、真実を顕かにする」ことのできる人間を育成します。このことを実現する心の一つとして「平等」の心を掲げています。『仏説阿弥陀経』には、次のような一段があります。
……さとりの国の池にはとても立派な蓮の華が咲いている。青色の蓮華は青い光、黄色の蓮華は黄色い光、赤色の蓮華は赤い光、白色の蓮華は白い色の光を放っている。一輪一輪ちがっており、それらはどれもそのまま香り高く何とも美しく素晴らしい。さとりの国はそのような徳の高い、言葉を超えた素晴らしさで満ちあふれている。

阿弥陀仏の光に照らされたすべての「いのち」は各々の特徴を持ったままに光り輝いていると、教えてくださっています。阿弥陀仏には、すべての違いを認め慈しむ眼があります。
私たちもまた、その眼をいただいてみた時、いのちがそれぞれの特徴を持ったままに光り輝いている世界が見えてきます。それこそが、本当の意味での「平等」であり、現代社会が目指すべき多様性（Diversity）の本質を示しています。
人はそれぞれ、ジェンダー、性的指向・性自認、障がいの有無、人種、民族、国籍、ルーツ、宗教、信条、社会的立場、年齢など、多様な背景を持って生きており、誰一人として同じ存在はいません。
龍谷大学は、すべてのいのちが尊重され、それぞれの特徴を持ったままに光り輝ける社会の実現を目指します。そのために、次のようなダイバーシティの取り組みを、積極的に推進していくことを、ここに宣言します。
The “Founding Spirit” of Ryukoku University is the spirit of the true teaching of Pure Land Buddhism (Jodo Shinshu). Ryukoku University, embracing the teachings of Shinran Shonin who lived in the vow of Amida Buddha to follow the path of truth, aspires to educate students to become people who “seek truth, live in truth, and reveal truth.” To realize this vision, we uphold the spirit of “Equality.” The following passage is found in the Sutra on Amida Buddha:
..There are lotus flowers, as large as chariot wheels, growing in the pools. Those of blue color emit blue radiance; those of yellow color emit yellow radiance; those of red color emit red radiance; those of white color emit white radiance. They are exquisite, wonderful, fragrant and pure. Shariputra, the Land of Perfect Bliss is filled with such splendor and adornments.

The Buddha (Shakyamuni) taught that all lives shine by the Buddha’s light, and each of them does so while maintaining their individual characteristics. A Buddha is able to see with compassion the differences between all sentient beings. When we, too, receive the eyes of the Buddha, we will also be able to see a world in which all lives shine brightly in their own way. This is the true meaning of “Equality,” and it represents the very essence of Diversity that modern society should strive to achieve.
Each individual carries a unique tapestry of backgrounds—gender, sexual orientation and gender identity, disability status, race, ethnicity, nationality, heritage, religion, beliefs, social status, age, and more—and no two individuals are the same.
Ryukoku University seeks the realization of a society where all lives are cherished and allowed to radiate their own unique light. We hereby declare that we will actively pursue the following commitments to diversity to make this vision a reality.
龙谷大学的“建学精神”即“净土真宗精神”。本校以在阿弥陀佛愿力中获得感化，在真实之道上精进一生的亲鸾圣人的处世之道为楷模，致力于培育“追求真理、践行真理、彰显真理”的人才。为了实现这一目标，我们秉持“平等”之心作为核心理念之一。《佛说阿弥陀经》中有这样一段记载：
……在极乐国土的七宝池里盛开着气派非凡的莲花。青色的莲花放着青色的光，黄色的莲花放着黄色的光，红色的莲花放着红色的光，白色的莲花放着白色的光。一朵一朵各不相同，无论是哪一朵都有其自有的馥郁香气，非常美丽，无与伦比。极乐国土，就是被这样的功德深厚且超越语言的极其美好者所充满着。

阿弥陀佛告诉我们，被佛光所普照的一切“生命”都是带着各自的特征在闪烁着光辉的。“佛”拥有一双承认一切不同的慈悲之眼。而当我们也得到了这样的一双眼来看世界的时候，我们就也能看到这个各“生命”都是在带着各自的特征散发着光芒的世界了。
这才是真正意义上的“平等”，也揭示了现代社会所追求的“多元性（Diversity）”的本质。
每个人都拥有多元的背景，如性别、性取向与性别认同、残障状况、种族、民族、国籍、出身背景、宗教、信仰、社会地位、年龄等各不相同，世界上不存在完全相同的两个人。
龙谷大学致力于实现一个所有生命都受到尊重、并在保留各自特征的同时熠熠生辉的社会。为此，我们在此庄重宣言，将积极推进以下多元性（Diversity）举措：
