Ryukoku Strategic Plan 400

Mission:RSP400・Vision 2039・Nurturing Strength and Mentality

Ryukoku University is an institution with its founding spirit based in the spirit of the true teachings of Pure Land Buddhism (Jodo Shinshu). In order to fulfill our role—one which is common to all universities—while nurturing people who are able to "seek truth, live in truth, and reveal truth," we have been involved in various activities in the areas of education, post-graduate research and social contribution.

The times before us are ambiguous, offering no clear answers, and are becoming more and more uncertain. It is precisely because of this that we feel it is significant to clarify our mission as expressed through the "Ryukoku Strategic Plan 400" (RSP400), as we expand our activities in education, post-graduate research and social contribution.

Based on this awareness, we have established our university's mission as expressed in the RSP400, as follows.

  • (1) Regardless of the situation, do not exclude others but rather accept them, as we contribute to the development of humanity and society by creating value.
  • (2) Be involved in activities aimed at realizing the mutual coexistence and prosperity of all humanity, as well as a society that is in harmony with the Earth's environment, and widely communicate and spread this insight throughout the world.
  • (3) Create a future wherein those with differing values are tolerated, and foster the development of those who bring about significant changes.

Fostering the attitude of reflection upon our self-centeredness and coexisting with others, accepting the existence of diversity in culture and values, and nurturing people who contribute to the creation of a harmonious society and to the advancement of humanity will be indispensable in upholding our society and helping it to develop in the upcoming era.

Indeed, these things are what we have been actively engaged in at Ryukoku University. Over the medium term, these achievements contribute to realizing the principle of "no one will be left behind," found in the SDGs of the United Nations.

In the RSP400, we have established our "Vision 2039" based on these principles.

By fostering the development of citizens who possess the qualities of “Magokoro”, our university strives to create new knowledge and value. By doing so, we can overcome any obstacles or differences, becoming a platform that contributes to world peace.

【What is “Magokoro” ?】

Human beings are by nature self-centered and tend to misunderstand truth. There is no "self." Rather, the countless ties we hold with others form what we have with others form what we know as our "self".By turning our gaze to our relationships with those around us, we cast off our self-centered behavior and build new relationships for the benefit of society.
With this kind of sturdy mindset, we reflect upon how we are, value the relationships we have with others. consider how we can contribute to the happiness of others and take action. We define these ambitions as “Magokoro” loosely translated as "sincerity of selfless devotion."

The Aim of the RSP400

The Aim of the RSP400

In other words, each student who enters our university is in charge of their own spontaneous growth as well as being exponents of a society that demonstrates both change and harmony as per our "Vision 2039" through what they have learned here, regardless of the Faculty or field of learning to which they belong. With this as our goal, the knowledge that our students should gain by means of the RSP400 establishes the strength and mentality that should be nurtured in our students, as shown below.

  • (1) Through what they learn at this university, our students gain the disciplines of "knowledge" and "skill," along with "attitude" and "the ability to reason," nurturing the power to create values that will be needed to bring about societal changes in a self-reliant way.
  • (2) Students become aware of how the countless ties we have with others form what we know as our "self"; and they nurture the mindset of considering how to contribute to the happiness of others and take action based on these relationships.
  • (3) In every situation within human society, we do not exclude others but rather accept them, taking the lead as those in charge of creating a harmonious society. With these ambitions, we nurture our mindset towards contributing to the development of society and to world peace, both in Japan and throughout the world.
