The Department offers courses in English linguistics and culture and literature of English-speaking areas, and also in improvement of English ability for Japanese students. Further, as a characteristic of Ryukoku University, offers an "English Lecture" program that covers Buddhism and other Japanese religions which have formed a central core of Japanese culture.  British Literature CourseStudy of British literature through novels, poetry, and drama with a focus on England and Ireland texts from Old English to the 20th century. American Literature CourseStudy of American literature through novels, poetry, and drama from the colonial period to the 20th century. English Language CourseSurvey of English linguistics from diverse viewpoints of its phonetic sound, meaning, vocabulary, conversation, grammar. British / American Culture CourseExploring the history, society, politics, philosophy, contemporary art, music, movies, and others areas in England and America to understand British and American culture.
