CASBEE evaluation

Ryukoku University’s buildings are designed to be environmentally friendly based on the evaluation criteria for Rank A or higher in CASBEE (Comprehensive Assessment System for Built Environment Efficiency), a tool for comprehensively evaluating and rating the environmental performance of buildings, town blocks, and cities from various perspectives.

<Evaluation results of facilities completed in or after FY2015>

Building Name Year of Completion Evaluation
Wagenkan (Fukakusa Campus) February 2015 Rank A obtained
Senshokan (Fukakusa Campus) September 2016 Rank A obtained
East Hall (Omiya Campus) February 2018 Rank B+ obtained
Jojukan (Fukakusa Campus) January 2020 Rank A obtained

We have asked Osaka Gas Facilities Corporation to analyze and break down (investigate) energy consumption data obtained from BEMS, an energy management and visualization system, to consider measures to further reduce energy consumption.

By continuously reducing energy (electricity/gas) consumption, we aim to achieve an eco-friendly campus with lower environmental burden and work to reduce electricity and gas usage costs.

Initiatives to improve the environment based on the KES (Kyoto Environmental Management System Standard) Step 1 criteria

To further promote efforts to achieve an eco-friendly campus, we established the Environmental Declaration in October 2013, and the Fukakusa Campus obtained KES (Kyoto Environmental Management System Standard) Step 1 certification in March 2014.

Since obtaining the certification, we have implemented environmental management based on the KES Step 1 criteria. In March 2019, we received a second review for confirmation of conformity (for renewal) from NPO KES Environmental Organization, and it was confirmed that our environmental improvement activities conformed to the KES Step 1 criteria.

Initiatives to improve the environment based on the Environmental Management System

1.Reduction of energy consumption and CO2 emissions

  • Perform proper control of air conditioning temperature and operation.
  • Perform intermittent operation of air conditioning systems.
  • Turn off unnecessary lights in empty classrooms, corridors, toilets and other areas.
  • Promote the visualization of energy consumption by regularly disclosing it on the global-warming-related page of the University’s website.
  • Inform faculty and staff members of specific measures to reduce energy consumption through Eco staff members, using energy consumption data obtained from the BEMS.
  • Request cooperation from the Student’s Union through the Student Affairs Department (use of partial lighting during extracurricular activities, etc.).

2.Reduction of paper consumption

  • Disclose the copy count in each department and curb the increase in the copy count in cooperation with Eco staff members.
  • Ask for examination of the need for copying and printing documents.
  • Promote the use of scanners (digitization of documents).
  • Promote the use of multifunction device functions (multiple page printing / double-sided printing).
  • Introduce new software that promotes the digitization of documents on a trial basis in cooperation with Eco staff members and related departments.

3.Reduction of waste (general waste / industrial waste)

  • Renew the waste-sorting display for indoor trash cans.
  • Disclose the waste separation category on the University’s website or other sites to make it known to the members of the University.
  • Conduct awareness-raising activities to promote waste separation at the orientation held at the time of admission.
  • Hold events to promote recycling (distribution of leaflets, etc.).
